Question: Does a world leader wear a world leading watch? The answer is yes and no.

An inevitable part of being a world leader is that the media and the general public love to check out and follow what you are wearing.

In fact many presidents and prime ministers around the world also happen to be avid watch collectors, and their tastes can run from the economical to the exorbitant.

Probably topping the exorbitant list for a world leader is Silvio Berlusconi, Prime Minister of Italy. Among his formidable collection is a $500,000 Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar.

In contrast, President of France Nicolas Sarkozy is often seen at top flight EEC conferences with a comparatively modest Girard Perregaux worn downwards on his wrist.

Russian Presidents both past and present are noted for their love of expensive Swiss watch brands.

Former General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, wears a gold Omega Constellation watch.

The current President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, prefers a gold Franck Muller Cintree Curvex Revolution Tourbillon watch.

While Vladimir Putin, not content with the Poljot Presidential watch specially made for him in Russia is often seen with costly Swiss watches on his wrist including a Patek Philippe Calatrava Perpetual Calendar, a Blancpain Flyback Chronograph and a Breguet Marine to name a few.

bill clinton wearing panerai

Not to be outdone in the Western hemisphere, former President Bill Clinton is an avid watch collector. He has often been seen wearing luxury watches including Panerai Luminor, Cartier Santos-Dumont and Roger Dubuis.

John F. Kennedy wore a gold Omega Speedmaster and gold Rolex Day-Date President – a watch designed for US Presidents by Rolex. And as for another former President George W. Bush, despite coming from one of the wealthiest political dynasties in America, he is happy with just an engraved Timex Indiglo.

If California Governor and action superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger can count as a world leader (at least he is married to a Kennedy) he wears a Royal Oak Offshore Gold watch, and no doubt they have to custom make the bracelet to fit his well honed wrists.

Meanwhile the current incumbent of the White House, Barack Obama wears a custom made stainless steel Jorg Gray 6500 Series Chronograph presented to him by the Secret Service on his 46th birthday.

So even if you haven’t got much time for politicians, it does at least go to show they have plenty of time for you.
