Officine Panerai Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanium

Officine Panerai has certainly been very active at SIHH 2013, with the Swiss/Italian watchmaker presenting a number of its offerings for this coming year.

Despite giving us a sneak preview of its new PAM00530 watch a few weeks prior to this year’s SIHH, the Officine Panerai Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanium was still one of the most talked about watches at the event.

The watch itself is a flyback chronograph with a titanium case, which measures 47mm in diameter. Panerai fans may well think that the watch looks pretty similar to the PAM 427, the limited edition timepiece produced in 2012 in recognition of Panerai’s support of the transatlantic yacht race, the Panerai Transat Classique regatta.

The PAM530 has been fitted with the Panerai’s classic lever device, which is used to seal the winding crown, in order to help ensure water resistance. One the reverse of the case, the watch’s P. 2006 movement is visible through a sapphire crystal window.

The black dial, which is surrounded by a polished titanium dial, is a pancake like structure that comprises two separate discs that feature a layer of super-LumiNova in between.

The term ‘Rapprapante’ refers to the watch’s split second function, which offers two large seconds hands in addition to the chronograph feature. The first of these hands is controlled by the button found at 8 o’clock, which is used for starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph. The second large hand can be used for timing a second event at the same time as the first hand or can be used to easily measure partial times. This can be operated via the button located at 10 o’clock. Putting it simply, this feature enables the watch to act as a lap timer, meaning you can stop on the second hands whilst the other one continues counting.

The P.2006 has a power reserve of 8 days, which is achieved by a special in house 3 spring barrel system. The watch also features a power reserve indicator displayed at the position of 6 o’clock.

The limited edition PAM00530 is part of Officine Panerai’s Specialities collection.
