SIHH 2013 saw Baume & Mercier premiere its new men’s Clifton Collection. The brand is perhaps the most accessible from the house of Richemont, and despite having a rich history in watch making it is certainly more affordable than other brands in the group.

The new collection is inspired by classic vintage dress watches from the 1950’s, which have been brought up to date with their modern and stylish design. The Clifton Series represents somewhat of an evolution from its Classima Collection, which from looking at these three watches, Clifton could well end up being one of B&M’s most popular collections yet.

Baume & Mercier Clifton Automatic Silver Dial (10052)

Taking a closer look at three of the particular highlights of the collection, first up is the Clifton 10052, which is distinguishable by its silver dial. Measuring 41mm in diameter, this particular version is a really clean and crisp design.

You can’t really go wrong with a watch like this. ‘Suitable for all occasions’ is up there with ‘sports watch’ as one of the most overused terms in watch making, but the Clifton Automatic Silver Dial is a truly excellent example of a classic looking watch that wouldn’t look out of place anywhere.  The blue hands on the silver dial look fantastic, which is also complimented by its Arabic numerals and index markers.

This finely balanced timepiece features a black alligator strap and offers water resistance to 50m. The watch is driven by an automatic Sellita SW260-1 movement, which vibrates at frequency of 4hz. The movement, which is visible through its transparent case back, is adorned with ‘Cotes de Geneve’.  The Clifton 10052 also has a 38 power reserve.

Baume & Mercier Clifton Automatic Black Dial (10053)

The Baume & Mercier Clifton Automatic Black Dial (10053) is basically the same model as the silver version, but which is maybe a little bolder looking. Complete with a brown leather strap, the watch features a seconds sub dial at 6 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock.

The black dial still offers great readability, which is off set against the silver hands.

Baume & Mercier Clifton Small Seconds Watch (10054)

Finally, the highlight of the collection is the Baume & Mercier Clifton Small Seconds, which measures 41mm in diameter and is housed in a stainless steel satin polished case. The watch’s brown leather strap works well against the colour of the Arabic numerals and hands on the silver dial.

Baume & Mercier fans are almost spoilt for choice with the Clifton collection, which will be available to buy from April 2013. With prices ranging from $2,700 to $6,300, these timepieces would make an excellent addition to any watch collection.
