Ex-USS-Kittiwake1

You certainly can’t accuse Oris of failing to provide its followers with a rich variety of passions; from motor sports chronographs, to a long line of aviation watches, to the Bob Dylan signature watch, there’s a watch range for every walk of life. It’s tempting to get in touch and run a few ideas by them.

Now, in order to commemorate the deliberate sinking of the USS Kittiwake in Grand Cayman, Oris has just released the Kittiwake Limited Edition. The watch is designed with the intention of offering visitors to the dive site a professional and trusted timepiece.

Built in 1944, USS Kittiwake served for 54 years in many important missions around the world, including the recovery of the black box recorder from the doomed Challenger spaceship in 1986.

On January 5th, 2011, the Cayman Government oversaw the deliberate sinking of the Kittiwake to form a new artificial reef.

You can snorkel overhead and see the main decks and topography of the ship as well as take a look down the smoke stack that opens up straight down to the bottom of the hull and the engine rooms. In time the Kittiwake will become an artificial reef, enhancing the marine environment with new fishery stock and habitats for marine life.

Within just a few weeks of the sinking some sizeable guests took up residence – including a 100lb Goliath grouper close to the propellor.

Limited to only 500 pieces, with each Oris Kittiwake Limited Edition watch there will be a donation given to the Kittiwake artificial reef project. Indeed the mechanical room of the sunken ship is dedicated to this partnership with the Oris plaque installed there.

The watch is available in a ProDiver titanium case with a “Rotation Safety System”, the back of the watch features the Kittiwake logo, together with the “diver down” warning flag on the dial, marking the association with the historic ship and its new role as a Mecca for diving enthusiasts.

The black dial displays wave printing, and the indexes of the timepiece are filled with Superluminova.

The set includes a rubber strap, with an easy to adjust titanium buckle for wearing over a wetsuit. Water resistant to 100bar (1000m) the Oris Kittiwake Limited Edition is expected to retail at around €2,418 ($3,429/£2,131).
