Short sleeves

Lifestyle

In Britain, summer comes but once a year, quite often for just a couple of days. The rest of the time it can be squally showers, grey skies, unseasonal cold snaps, you are never quite sure what to expect, but at least you can rely on the soothing slap of leather on willow as the cricket season get under way, and then there’s Wimbledon, less dependent on the weather these days, provided you have exorbitantly priced corporate tickets for the centre court. But then some summers in Britain you get lucky, and for no discernible reason, you find yourself basking in week after week of glorious weather that would be the envy of all the hot spots in Europe.

For these all too rare summers, the shirt sleeves come out in profusion, in all their checked, striped and multi-patterned glory. It’s at times like these that your average Timex beater just isn’t going to stand up to scrutiny. You need a watch which can withstand the harsh exposure of several inches of sunlit wrist, for with a short sleeved shirt, there is simply no hiding place.

Here is our guide to matching some excellent, desirable, and often unusual watch choices with the pick of this summer’s short sleeved shirts.

The shirt: Criminal Birchwood Chambray Shirt

Criminal short sleeved Birchwood chambray

A soft chambray shirt is always a summer must, and this offering from Criminal should easily get you arrested for wearing a cool shirt in a built up area. The collar is button down and the sleeves are the currently hip bicep cut to show off the gym enhanced pythons. £28.00

The watch: Technomarine Cruise Original

Technomarine Cruise Original

This is the watch that started the Technomarine obsession, and there really is a passion for Technomarine around the world. Hailing from the South of France, TechnoMarine’s signature style is cool, classic and customisable in countless colour combinations. The 45mm stainless steel watch is visible beneath a clear, transparent case cover that is easily removed and replaced with a different colour. Soft silicone straps are also removable and also available in a wide variety of colours. Around £220.00.

The shirt: Hugo Boss Linen Check Shirt

Hugo Boss Short Sleeved Linen Check Shirt

A lettuce leaf crisp fresh check linen shirt from Hugo Boss. The sleeves are cut a little shorter and the fit is slim in accordance with the current trend for everything to look well honed. Only attempt this type of shirt if you have been hitting the kettlebells recently. £99.00

The watch: Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex Oyster Cosmograph

This is one of the newest additions to the Rolex fold, only launched at Baselworld last month. The watch originally made famous by Paul Newman, is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary.  This new version is crafted for the first time ever in 950 platinum, complemented with signature Cerachrom ceramic bezel in chestnut brown and a dial finished in a distinctive ice blue shade. It comes equipped with Rolex’s calibre 4130 self-winding mechanical chronograph movement, a precision designation approved by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, and a solid-link Oyster bracelet in 950 platinum.

The shirt: Vintage 1960s Arrow Shirt

Vintage Arrow 1960s shirt

You don’t always have to seek out a brand new shirt to look super cool and original. Some of the most crucial short sleeved shirts are American made from the 60s. If you hanker for the vintage Ivy league, Don Draper at the beach look, which is still a look of great wonder, there are several vintage sites that still sell these types of shirts. Here is a tapered brick, black, dull gold striped cotton Ivy League prep style mod dress shirt with fitted sides, tails, button front, matched patch pocket, and the essential button down collar with a back collar button. £15.00.

The watch: Eberhard & Co 1950s Vintage Watch

Eberhard & Co vintage 50s watch

Match a vintage shirt with a great vintage watch. Eberhard was, and still is, a niche Swiss brand that had something of a reputation for looking at things in a slightly different way and coming up with fascinating technical solutions to problems that nobody really worried about in the first instance. The case back outer is signed “Eberhard & Co” in the company’s distinctive art deco typeface, together with “Acier Staybrite”, this being a reference to a type of stainless steel that was prominent in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. The layout of the dial is extremely attractive, with gold batons matching perfectly the original alpha shaped hands. A single minute track runs around the outer edge, and the stylised “Eberhard & Co” emblem appears above the dial centre point.

The shirt: Alexander McQueen Skull Patterned Shirt

Alexander McQueen Skull Patterned Short Sleeve Shirt

If you fancy a little designer skulduggery this summer, this grey cotton shirt from Alexander McQueen should do very nicely. The unique fabric has been jacquard-woven to incorporate the label’s signature skull motif and is tailored in a neat, slim fit with a discreet button down collar. At £305.89, however the price tag is nothing like as slim.

The watch: Daniel Strom Memento Mori Carpe Diem

Daniel Strom Memento Mori Carpe Diem watch

Even in the middle of summery buttercups and fields of daisies we can never forget that we are dust and to dust we shall return. To perfectly match the mood of the McQueen skull motif shirt, Daniel Strom has embraced the skull trend and made it his own with this watch from his Agonium collection. Titled “Memento Mori, Carpe Diem” (remember you will die, seize the day) the highly detailed watch casing is covered with skulls large and small and is available in your choice of precious metal including sterling silver, gold, platinum, and palladium options. The dial comes in black or bone white and features polished steel hands and roman numerals (no skulls), and the look is finished with a black alligator hornback strap with a matching metal buckle. £Lots

The shirt: Alfred Dunhill Linen Shirt

Alfred Dunhill Check Short-Sleeved Linen Shirt

This breezy, gauzy linen shirt from first class lifestyle brand Alfred Dunhill is specially engineered for a flattering fit – balance the multi-coloured check pattern with tan chinos or indigo selvedge jeans. £252.00.

The watch: Burberry Britain

Burberry Britain

Match the shirt with another venerable British brand on your wrist. Burberry, perhaps more famous for the luxury trenchcoat than their timepieces, released the Burberry Britain collection at Baselworld last month. It’s the brand’s first mechanical watch. The Britain Collection is a shining example of both Burberry traditions in watchmaking and of more traditional British design, combined in a series of pieces that are stylish and elegant. Prices start at around £600.00.

The shirt: Belstaff Derington Cotton Shirt

Belstaff Derington Cotton Shirt

A brand steeped in British tradition, and with close links to motorsports. The heritage brand’s dedication to quality craftsmanship is evident in every detail of this cotton Derington shirt, from the military-inspired construction to the buttons designed to resemble the treads of tyres. £295.18

The watch: 88 Rue du Rhone Gents Watch

88 Rue du Rhone Gents Watch

A chic new Swiss luxury watch brand introduced by the Bernheim brothers; Elie and Pierre, grandsons of the famous Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil, their dream was to create quality timepieces at an affordable price allowing more people to enjoy an otherwise exclusive luxury. The clean white dial and black Roman numerals on the dial of the watch we have chosen works perfectly with the Derington Shirt. £695.00

Godfather chic choice:

The shirt: Dolce & Gabbana Multi-Patterned Shirt

Dolce & Gabbana Printed Cotton Short-Sleeve Shirt

Immaculate Italian tailoring and finished with an open collar. This shirt oozes leisurely summer looks with a Johnny Depp/Michael Corleone-on-holiday suave nonchalence. Team it up with round sunglasses and maybe a woven leather bracelet on one wrist, and our striking watch recommendation below. The price tag is a bit Johnny Depp too. £521.00

The watch: Bulgari Octo Maserati

Bulgari Octo Maserati

If you’re going to go with Italian inspiration, you might as well go the whole pastrami, and few watches say Italian style better than the Bulgari Octo Maserati. The Bulgari Octo Maserati is a pairing of two iconic Italian brands – and the Dolce & Gabbani shirt makes three. The famed Roman watch-and-jewellery house teamed up with the Modena-based makers of luxurious sports cars to produce a Swiss timepiece that should appeal to aficionados of motorsports and haute horlogerie.

Powered by a manufacture movement, Calibre GG7800, developed at Bulgari’s atelier in Le Sentier, Switzerland, the watch is a column-wheel chronograph that features a jumping hour function (visible in a window at 12 o’clock), along with four retrograde displays for the minutes, date, and chronograph hour and minute counters. The chronograph seconds hand is positioned at 6 o’clock, an unorthodox placement that Bulgari says will ensure that it never obscures the hour indicator. The dial resembles a Maserati radiator grille. £expensive
