Fifa Best XI 2012

Following the announcement that Lionel Messi has been awarded a record breaking 4th consecutive Ballon d’Or at this year’s FIFA Annual Gala event held in Zurich, the evening also saw FIFA announce its World XI containing the best footballers from 2012.

Whilst some claim it was a travesty (no, we’re not talking about Lionel Messi’s choice of dinner jacket) only players from Spain’s La Liga were selected in the XI, few could argue with the eleven players who eventually made the grade.

Representing a total of five countries, the 2012 dream team contained five players each from Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as another from Madrid’s rivals, Atletico.

The players in question include Goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, a back four made up of Gerard PiqueSergio RamosDani Alves and Marcelo; Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso are in midfield, with a pretty lethal trio featuring Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao in attack.

You have to admit that it’s a pretty tasty eleven, on which any club would struggle to put a price tag. Even Manchester City or Paris St Germain’s deepest of deep pockets would struggle to be able to afford this team!

It is of little surprise then that a number of the world’s leading watch makers already have links to many of the players that feature in the world eleven. For example, Leo Messi is an ambassador for Audermars Piguet, who produces the limited edition Lionel Messi Royal Oak Chronograph, after all, who wouldn’t want the world’s greatest footballer wearing one their watches?

Franck Muller Perpetual Calendar Bi-Retro Chronograph Collection

Cristiano Ronaldo recently entered into an exclusive partnership with esteemed watchmaker Franck Muller, who personally presented the Madrid number 7 with his very own series of watches. The watches are identifiable by the number 7 indicators which are embellished with diamonds.

The timepieces also boast a black dial that features a chronographic timer and perpetual calendar, which sit inside an 18k rose gold case. The partnership is the first time that FM has produced a timepiece for a footballer. Each watch in the series features a caseback that has been engraved with Ronaldo’s silhouette and signature.

If you were thinking of purchasing a watch from Frank Muller’s Cristiano Ronaldo collection, unfortunately you’re out of look as all the timepieces were already sold in advance of their launch in November 2012. Although the price was not officially revealed, it is estimated that a watch of this kind would cost about €110,000.

Seiko Sportura FC Barcelona Chronograph Watch

Barcelona are currently half way into a three year partnership with Japanese watch maker Seiko. A selection  of the teams stars players including Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Xavi, who were all named in the FIFA Pro World XI, as well as head coach Tito Vilanova have featured in a number of promotional campaigns for the FC Barcelona Seiko Sportura.

The Seiko Sportura pictured here is the second edition and was presented to the FC Barcelona team and coaching staff in October 2012. The new Sportura features a black dial with luminescent white frames, hands and markers. The dial also displays the clubs logo, with the Barcelona team motto ‘mes que un club’ (more than a club) engraved on the caseback. The watch is powered by a Calibre 7T63 quartz movement and also features a single time alarm function that can be set via the sub dial that is found at 6 o’clock. The Seiko Sportura FC Barcelona Chronograph usually retails for around £350.
