ROLEX

Do LA Galaxy footballer David Beckham and Hollywood actor /producer Ashton Kutcher share anything in common apart from ownership of a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA? More than you might at first imagine.

They arrived in Beverly Hills via totally different routes, but David and Ashton share several things in common. David was born in May 1975 in Leytonstone England, and enjoyed one of the most successful football careers in the UK and Italy. In July 2007 he made the move to Los Angeles to play for Major League Soccer club the LA Galaxy amidst a massive blaze of publicity.

David Beckham

He married former Spice Girl Victoria Adams in July 1999. At the time he was far less well known than his celebrity wife, but since that time David has become a sporting legend known and loved around the world. Today David and Victoria share equal celebrity status and are probably the world’s most famous celebrity couple.

Ashton, born in February 1978 in Cedar Rapids Iowa, is also part of a major Hollywood celebrity pairing. He started dating top Hollywood actress Demi Moore in 2003 when he was far less well known and they married in 2005. David describes himself as half Jewish and Ashton and Demi Moore have adopted the religion and were married by a Rabbi at a Kaballah Centre and Ashton is a student of Kaballah.

Like David, Ashton’s wife Demi has interests outside of the Hollywood rumour mill. Demi is described by the New York Times as ‘the world’s most famous doll collector’, while Victoria Beckham continues to build a credible own label fashion brand. Demi Moore was the first to model one of Victoria’s creations at the 2010 Oscars.

In recent months both David and Ashton have been plastered all over the gossip columns for the wrong reasons: they have both been accused of having extra marital affairs. Ashton’s alleged lover is 21-year old Brittney Jones whom he would see when Demi was away making movies. Meanwhile David Beckham’s alleged mistress Irma Nici says she spent nights with Beckham at a hotel in New York in 2007. Both claims have been vigorously refuted by both David and Ashton.

The combined income of David and Victoria is estimated to be well over US$200 million, while Ashton and Demi’s combined wealth comfortably tops US$100 million, so they can both easily afford an ocean of Rolex Sea Dweller DEEPSEA Chronograph watches.

As for the watch itself, the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is waterproof to a remarkable 3,900 metres, which is probably more depth than David and Ashton could muster between the two of them. A major new feature of the innovative system is the high-performance ring that is set inside the middle case between the crystal and the case back. The ring is produced from the nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel. It allows the watch to resist the pressure exerted by water on the crystal and the case back.

It runs on a 3135 calibre COSC–chronometer certified movement and the solid steel strap is designed to be adjustable over a diving suit. Normal surface air-filled watch cases and crystals designed for extreme depths must be dimensionally large to cope with the encountered water pressure. To obtain its water resistance the Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA watch case has a diameter of 43.0 mm, thickness of 17.7 mm (domed crystal thickness 5.5 mm) and the case and bracelet weigh 220g.
